1999 Car Raffle Winner: James G Hoopes III of Linwood

James G Hoopes III of Linwood purchased what turned out to be lucky ticket No. 470 in the annual sports raffle to benefit Jersey Shore Big Brothers Big Sisters held September 6 at the Windrift Hotel in Avalon. Hoopes, a New Jersey State Trooper, was among more than 800 people who purchases $100 raffle tickets with the hope of winning.

Engaged to be married in June 2000, Hoopes, 27, was encouraged to purchase the ticket by his fiancée. When Jersey Shore Big Brothers Big Sisters Executive Director Beatrix Jerkins called Hoopes to inform him of winning the Mercedes-Benz, Hoopes says he thought it was his fiancée playing a joke. This years raffle raised more than $30,000 to fund services and programs provided by Jersey Shore Big Brothers Big Sisters.

The agency serves at-risk youths in Cape May and Atlantic Counties by providing matches between youngsters and adult volunteer mentors.
