1999 Car Raffle Winner: James G Hoopes III

G Hoopes III of Linwood purchased what turned out to be lucky ticket No. 470 in
the annual sports raffle to benefit Jersey Shore Big Brothers Big Sisters held
September 6 at the Windrift Hotel in Avalon. Hoopes, a New Jersey State
Trooper, was among more than 800 people who purchases $100 raffle tickets with
the hope of winning.
Engaged to be married in June 2000,
Hoopes, 27, was encouraged to purchase the ticket by his fiancée. When Jersey
Shore Big Brothers Big Sisters Executive Director Beatrix Jerkins called Hoopes
to inform him of winning the Mercedes-Benz, Hoopes says he thought it was his fiancée
playing a joke. This years raffle raised more than $30,000 to fund services and
programs provided by Jersey Shore Big Brothers Big Sisters.
The agency serves at-risk youths in
Cape May and Atlantic Counties by providing matches between youngsters and
adult volunteer mentors.
